Not sure which phone number to choose with Salesmsg?
We’ll break it down for you! In this guide, you’ll learn the differences between Local (area code) and Toll-free numbers, plus how to add a new number or bring your existing one with you.

Pick the Type of Number That Fits Your Needs

  • Local Number (Area Code)

    • Throughput: ~1 message per second (MPS).

    • Perfect for one-on-one or small-group messaging. For example, sending 1,000 messages takes around 16.7 minutes.

  • Toll‑free Number

    • Default Throughput: ~3 MPS.

    • Can be upgraded—up to 25, 50, or even 100 MPS—for higher volume (fees apply).

    • Great if you're messaging a broad customer base nationwide.

  • Short‑Code (e.g., "79000")

    • Delivers very high throughput, ideal for large-scale, frequent messaging campaigns.

    • Contact Salesmsg to check eligibility.

Use a Phone Number You Already Own!

Already have a number you love? No problem - Salesmsg gives you three easy ways to bring it with you:

A. Hosting (SMS‑enable it in Salesmsg)

  • Keeps voice calling with your current provider, while SMS is handled by Salesmsg.

  • Steps:

    1. Confirm approved texting compliance (A2P 10DLC) in your Salesmsg account for local U.S. numbers to avoid carrier filtering.

    2. For VoIP (online voice service provider e.g. Vonage, RingCentral, etc.): ask your current provider to delete the SMS routing profile (ā€œSPIDā€)

    3. When the number is ready - Submit a ticket to our team via the button directly below.

  • Takes about 2–3 business days.

B. Porting (Move the entire number, including voice - to Salesmsg)

  • SMS, MMS, and calling all handled by Salesmsg.

  • Steps:

    1. Confirm approved texting compliance (A2P 10DLC) in your Salesmsg account for local U.S. numbers to avoid carrier filtering.

    2. Keep your number active with your current provider until the port is fully complete to avoid delays.

    3. Submit a ticket to our team via the button directly below.

  • Takes about 2–4 weeks.

C. Transferring a Twilio Number

  • Bring your Twilio number into Salesmsg - everything (SMS, MMS, voice) will move over.

  • Timeline: Roughly 3–5 business days, though delays can happen depending on the losing provider.

🚨 CLICK HERE TO START YOUR TWILIO TRANSFER ā€¼ļø

  • šŸ’”Note: Transferring a Twilio number to your Salesmsg account is different from integrating your Twilio account with Salesmsg. You can find Twilio integration steps here instead.

What About Downtime?

  • Toll‑Free Numbers: Texting can begin only after they’re verified in-app through Salesmsg

  • Local Numbers (U.S.): Carriers may take up to 3 business days post-port or host, to sync your Salesmsg 10DLC compliance. During this time, you might see error code 30034 - ā€œMessage from an Unregistered Number.ā€ It should resolve once everything is synced.

Text-Enable Your Landline Number

Have a landline you’d like to use for texting? You can easily SMS-enable it through Salesmsg - no need to change your voice service!

Just follow the steps in-app to get started. You’ll need to:

  • Enter your landline phone number.

  • Provide billing information.

  • Verify ownership with a quick phone call (we’ll send you a code to enter).

  • Submit a signed Letter of Authorization (we’ll walk you through it).
