Search, create, and update contacts by name, phone, or email
Pull full contact profiles including tags, custom fields, and opt-in status
Apply and remove tags on contacts
Search conversations by contact name, phone number, or message keyword
Retrieve full conversation details including assignee, inbox, status, and participants
Send or schedule SMS with automatic opt-out checking
Report on messaging, calling, conversations, contact growth, team performance, and credit usage for any date range
Before You Start
An active Salesmsg account with your normal login credentials
A paid ChatGPT plan. Custom MCP apps are a beta feature and availability varies by plan, region, and workspace settings
ChatGPT web only. Custom apps are not available in the ChatGPT mobile apps
On Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspaces, an admin or owner may need to enable developer mode and publish the app before members can use it
If custom apps are not available on your plan, you can still use Salesmsg with Claude or another MCP-compatible assistant.
Connect Salesmsg to ChatGPT
Step 1 β Open your app settings
Open ChatGPT on the web
Click your name in the bottom-left corner and select Settings
Select Apps from the left menu
You'll see your Enabled apps along with an Advanced settings row.
Step 2 β Turn on developer mode
Click Advanced settings
Toggle on Developer mode
Developer mode is marked Elevated risk because it lets you add connectors that can modify or delete data. Salesmsg only accesses the account you authorize, but review the warning before continuing.
Step 3 β Create the Salesmsg app
Click Create app
Enter Salesmsg in the Name field. The icon and description are optional
Under Connection, leave Server URL selected
Enter
https://mcp.salesmessage.comin the URL fieldLeave Authentication set to OAuth. ChatGPT discovers the correct OAuth settings from the server URL automatically β you do not need to open Advanced OAuth settings or enter any client credentials
Tick I understand and want to continue to acknowledge the security notice
Click Create
Sign in with your existing Salesmsg credentials when prompted, then authorize the connection
Salesmsg now appears in your Enabled apps list.
Step 4 β Start using it
Open a new chat, select Salesmsg from the tools menu in the composer, and ask in plain language.
Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspaces
On managed workspaces, an admin or owner creates the app and then publishes it so the rest of the team can use it. Go to Workspace settings β Apps, open the Drafts tab, and click Publish. Review the safety warnings for write actions before confirming.
Enterprise and Edu admins can use Configure Actions to choose which Salesmsg tools are allowed and Configure Access to limit the app to specific groups before publishing.
Finding Salesmsg in the Plugins Directory
Salesmsg is also being listed in the ChatGPT Plugins Directory. Once it is live there, you can open the listing and select Connect instead of setting the app up manually β you will still sign in with your Salesmsg credentials to authorize. Existing connections are not affected.
Search, Create, and Update Contacts
Tell ChatGPT what you need in plain language. For example:
"Find the contact John Smith in Salesmsg"
"Create a new Salesmsg contact with phone number 555-123-4567"
"Update Sarah's email to [email protected]"
"Show me everything on file for the contact at 555-987-6543"
ChatGPT searches by name, phone, or email and returns matching results. When creating a contact, only a phone number is required. Updates apply only to the fields you specify β nothing else in the profile is changed.
Pull Contact Profiles and Apply Tags
Ask ChatGPT to pull a full profile before sending a message or planning follow-up. The profile includes name, phone, and email; tags and custom fields; and opt-in status.
Example prompts:
"Tag John Smith as VIP in Salesmsg"
"Remove the Cold Lead tag from Sarah"
"What tags does this contact have?"
If the tag already exists it is applied immediately. ChatGPT can also create a new tag if the label does not match an existing one.
Search and Analyze Conversations
Ask ChatGPT to find a conversation by contact name, phone number, or a keyword from the thread. Once located, it can retrieve full details including assignee, inbox, status, and participants.
Example prompts:
"Find my Salesmsg conversation with John Smith"
"Search Salesmsg conversations mentioning refund"
"Summarize the last 10 messages in this thread"
"Which conversations in my Sales inbox are still open?"
This gives ChatGPT the context it needs before taking any next action.
Send and Schedule Texts
Tell ChatGPT who to message and what to send. Reference a contact by name or use a phone number directly. If you have multiple Salesmsg inboxes, specify which one to send from β otherwise your default inbox is used.
Example prompts:
"Send a follow-up text to John Smith from my Sales inbox"
"Text 555-987-6543 to confirm their appointment tomorrow"
"Schedule a reminder text to Sarah for Friday at 9am"
Opt-out status is checked automatically on every send. If a contact has opted out, the message will not be sent.
ChatGPT shows an approval card before sending, since sending a message on your behalf counts as an important action. Review the recipient and message text before approving.
Report on Your Account Performance
ChatGPT can read the same reporting that powers your Salesmsg Analytics dashboard, so you can ask "how are we doing?" questions directly in chat. Analytics access is read-only and scoped to your connected account.
You can report on:
Messages β send and receive volume, delivery rate
Calls β inbound and outbound volume, average duration
Conversations β throughput and trends
Contacts β growth over time
Team performance β response and resolution times, for the whole team or broken down per agent
Credit usage β total spend by category, or itemized by source such as broadcasts, automations, and chatbots
Any date range works, and ChatGPT can compare a period against the one before it. You can filter by inbox, phone number, team member, or tag β just use the names, and ChatGPT resolves them for you.
Example prompts:
"How many new contacts did we get last month, and how does that compare to the month before?"
"How many messages did we send last month, and what was our delivery rate?"
"How many calls did we make and receive last week, and what's our average call duration?"
"How's the team doing on response times this month versus last month? Can you break that down by agent?"
"How many credits did we use this month, broken down by type?"
"Show me call activity for the Sales inbox outside business hours"
Time periods use your account timezone automatically, and you can override it by naming a timezone in your question.
Available Tools
Once connected, ChatGPT can use the Salesmsg tools below. You don't need to call these by name β just ask in plain language and ChatGPT picks the right one. They're listed here for reference, and because workspace admins choose which of them to allow.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a separate login?
No. You authenticate using your existing Salesmsg username and password during the initial connection. No separate credentials are needed.
Analytics questions return a permission error. What do I do?
Reconnect Salesmsg in ChatGPT. Analytics was added after the original connection was released, so connections created before then do not include analytics permissions. Removing and re-adding the app grants them. Credit usage reporting also requires billing permissions on your Salesmsg account.
Can ChatGPT export my reports to a file?
No. ChatGPT can report the numbers in the conversation, but CSV and other file exports are not available through the connection. Use the Analytics dashboard in Salesmsg for exports.
Do I need to fill in Advanced OAuth settings?
No. Once you enter the Salesmsg server URL, ChatGPT discovers the OAuth configuration automatically. You do not need a client ID or secret.
What is the Tunnel option?
Tunnel is for connecting to MCP servers running on a private network or local machine. Salesmsg is a hosted remote server, so leave Server URL selected.
Does this work on the ChatGPT mobile app?
No. Custom MCP apps are available on ChatGPT web only.
I don't see developer mode or the Create app button.
Custom MCP apps are a beta feature and availability depends on your ChatGPT plan, region, and workspace settings. On managed workspaces, an admin must enable it. Check with your workspace admin, or use Salesmsg with another MCP-compatible assistant instead.
Can I send from any inbox?
Yes. When sending SMS, you can specify which Salesmsg inbox to send from. If you do not specify, your default inbox is used.
What happens if a contact has opted out?
Opt-out status is checked automatically before sending. If the contact has opted out, the message will not be sent.
Does Salesmsg work with voice mode, agent mode, or deep research?
Voice mode and agent mode do not support custom apps. Deep research can use Salesmsg for reading and searching, but not for sending or updating.
Can I use Salesmsg with other AI assistants?
Yes. Salesmsg MCP Tools work with any MCP-compatible AI assistant. See Use Salesmsg via MCP for Claude and other clients.
