What is a Short Code?

  • A short‑code is a special 5‑ or 6‑digit number you use to send & receive SMS/MMS messages.

  • It’s meant for messaging large audiences (thousands of contacts).

  • Using a short‑code helps avoid having your messages flagged as spam by mobile carriers.

  • Note: Short codes are only available on Premium plans in Salesmsg.


When You Can’t Use a Short Code

There are certain uses or industries where short codes are restricted - meaning you won’t be allowed to use them. Some of these are:

Restricted Use Case

Examples

Illegal products/services federally or in any U.S. state

Anything banned or heavily regulated across the board

“High‑risk” financial services

Such as certain loans, debt relief, etc.

Gambling

Lotteries, betting, etc.

Work & investment opportunity promotions

Scams or risky investment pitches

Lead‑generation where info is shared with 3rd parties

If you’re collecting personal data and selling/sharing it

Competing directly with telco services

For example, if your messaging competes with what phone companies offer


How You Can Use a Short Code via Salesmsg

If everything is in compliance, here's what you can do:

  • Two‑way texting

  • Mass broadcasts or bulk messaging

  • Sending alerts & notifications

  • Automating messages via CRM or workflows


Types of Short‑Codes

There are two:

  1. Vanity short‑code — you get to choose the number (if available).

  2. Random short‑code — Salesmsg assigns one at random.


How to Apply for a Dedicated Short Code

Applying for a short code requires detailed information and a few key materials to ensure compliance with carrier regulations. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you prepare:

  • Step 2: Gather Required Information

    To ensure your application is approved without delays, you'll need to provide the following:


    🏢 Business Information

    Be prepared to share:

    • Your company name and contact details

    • Industry and business type

    • Website URL

    • A short description of what your business does


    💬 Use Case Details

    Carriers need to understand how you intend to use the short code, including:

    • The types of messages you’ll send (e.g., alerts, promotions, reminders, 2-way communication)

    • Who your audience is

    • How users will opt in to receive messages

    🖼️ Visual Mock-Up (Required)

    A visual mock-up is required to show where and how users are informed about the short code and how they opt in.

    Your mock-up can be:

    • A screenshot or wireframe of a webpage

    • A sample opt-in SMS script

    • An image or design of physical signage or printed materials

    📄 Opt-In Compliance

    Carriers require that your opt-in process follows strict industry standards, which must include:

    • Clear disclosure of what users are signing up for

    • Message frequency and any associated data rates

    • Links to your privacy policy and terms of service

  • Step 3:Salesmsg Submits Your Application to Twilio

    Once we receive your completed application and opt-in flow, Salesmsg will:

    • Review your materials

    • Submit your application to Twilio, who then works with mobile carriers for approval

  • 💰 Quarterly: $3,000 – $4,500

  • 💰 Annually: $11,000

Pricing depends on factors like whether you choose a vanity (custom) or random short code.


Timeline: How Long Does It Take?

  • 8–12 weeks (on average)

  • Timeline depends on how quickly we receive complete and accurate info


Frequently Asked Questions

Will My Short Code Work Internationally?

No - short codes do not work internationally. Short codes are country-specific and must be provisioned separately for each country. At this time, Salesmsg only supports short codes in the United States and Canada.

If you need to message recipients outside of these countries, consider using alternative methods such as:

  • 10DLC (10-digit long codes)

  • Toll-free numbers
